Two MLB players left a divisional showdown Thursday night after a scary collision at first base.
Ildemaro Vargas of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Max Muncy of the Los Angeles Dodgers crashed to the infield floor after a bang-bang play.
Muncy lined a ball in the fifth inning and Vargas, seeing that pitcher Ryne Nelson wouldn’t make it to the bag in time, charged to first. Muncy beat him to it, but the players collided and flew into the air.

The two remained on the field for several minutes as coaches worked with them in a quiet stadium. Muncy stood up first and slowly walked to the dugout, while Vargas got up with help and walked towards his dugout.
Muncy left with difficulty breathing and was evaluated for a concussion, but avoided. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he wouldn’t play Friday against the Angels (it was already a scheduled day off) but could be available over the weekend.
Vargas suffered bruising all over his left side: thigh, ribs and neck. The X-rays were negative and he told coach Torey Lovullo that he would be ready to play on Friday, if necessary.

Muncy told reporters he was a little banged up but will recover.
“I really hope Vargas is okay; I sent him something,” he said. “I hope he’s okay and it’s not too bad. But it’s just a bad situation where it seems like none of us knew which direction to take.”
Vargas told reporters, through an interpreter, that his “whole body” felt like he was “hitting a truck.”
“That’s the kind of thing you see on the baseball field when two players are lying on the ground after trying to make a play,” Lovullo said. “It’s hard to see, but they both came off the field.”
