The KP Assembly rejects the sin amendments and asks for press freedom

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) assembly approved a resolution that condemns amendments to the Electronic Crime Prevention Law (PCA), said Express News.

The resolution affirmed that the Peque Law amended imposes restrictions on press freedom, which the KP assembly strongly rejects as an infraction of freedom of expression. The resolution was presented by Shafiullah Jan, a member of the Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) of Pakistan.

The resolution also expressed solidarity with the journalistic community, emphasizing a firm condemnation of the act. The KP Assembly asked the Federal Government to revoke the controversial and anti -democratic amendments to the PCA law.

The federal government took measures to strengthen PECA with new amendments aimed at false news and illegal online content.

The bill, entitled Law (amendment) of 2025 electronic crimes, proposed strict sanctions, which include up to three years in prison and fines of 2 million rupees for disinning misinformation.

The amendments also describe the establishment of a digital rights protection authority (DRPA), which will have broad powers to regulate social networks and online platforms.

Organizations of journalists from all over Pakistan have firmly opposed these amendments, expressing concern about the lack of consultation and their implications for press freedom.
