- Merch on Demand leverages Alexa for Shopping for new AI-generated designs
- Direct-to-consumer upgrade works on the app or website and is available with Prime shipping
- Only US customers will get it for now; Etsy and others could be affected
Amazon has launched a new feature within Alexa for Shopping that allows customers to generate their own product designs from AI prompts, which they can then print on physical products like sweatshirts and T-shirts.
Senior editor Jacquelyn Smith said in an announcement that users may want to print “the funniest inside joke from a group chat… t-shirts for an upcoming family gathering… [or] a beloved mascot reimagined as a cartoon,” implying that the new feature is designed primarily for consumer markets.
The new AI upgrade will be powered by the company’s existing Merch on Demand platform, meaning Amazon is behind manufacturing, fulfillment, shipping, and customer service.
Available in the app, customers can tap the Alexa icon or search “personalize” to describe an idea, refine it with follow-up prompts, and order the product immediately. It is also available on the website for PC users.
With the new tool, Amazon is directly targeting other print-on-demand platforms like Printful, Shutterfly, Etsy, and more, and democratizes access to personalized products with all the benefits of Amazon, like fast Prime shipping.
This comes shortly after the company launched Alexa for Shopping, which updates the previous Rufus assistant with newer Alexa+ capabilities for a smoother overall experience.
Smith noted that the current product range, which is primarily dominated by apparel, includes T-shirts, V-necks, long-sleeved shirts, polos, short zips, pullovers, hoodies, sweatshirts, tank tops and raglans. Glasses and bottles of water are also available.
And as with any new feature, US customers will be the first to benefit. Amazon did not mention any plans to expand to other geographies at this time.
