The 2026 World Cup is finally around the corner, and while it marks the 23rd edition of the quadrennial global tournament, this edition of the event is unlike any of its predecessors.

For starters, the 2026 World Cup marks the first time the event has been co-hosted by three different countries, with the United States, Canada and Mexico sharing honors. However, the widely dispersed host sites in North America are not the only unique factors.

The 2026 World Cup will also feature an expanded field of teams, going from the traditional 32-team field to 48. With the addition of 16 teams also comes modified group stage play, ways forward and tiebreaker scenarios that will be worth keeping a close eye on throughout the tournament.

How do teams advance outside of the World Cup group stage?

The top two teams from each of the 12 four-team groups will advance to the knockout stage. During the round-robin group stage, teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. This is the same format we’ve seen at previous World Cups, although 24 teams automatically advance from the group stage instead of 16.

The main difference is that there will be an additional round of knockout matches, as the eight best third-place finishers from the group stage will also advance. This converts the traditional round of 16 into the round of 32 as the first series of matches in the knockout round.

What are the tiebreaker criteria for the World Cup group stage and third-place finishers?

Since the group stage consists of a round-robin game, with each of the four teams playing the other three teams in their group once, ties in the standings are very likely.

If two or more teams in a group finish with the same number of points, the following tiebreaker rules (in order) will determine which country advances:

  • Points obtained from the head-to-head match
  • Overall goal difference in all group matches
  • Total goals scored in all group matches
  • Fair Play Points: Fewest yellow and red cards in all group matches, with yellow cards counting as -1 point, indirect red cards (two yellows) as -3 points, a direct red card as -4 points and a yellow card followed by a direct red card as -5 points.

As for how eight of the 12 teams that will finish third in the group stage will advance to the single-table round of 32, another set of tiebreaker rules will likely need to be implemented:

  • Most points in the group stage
  • Higher goal difference
  • Most goals scored
  • Best Fair Play Score
  • FIFA World Ranking

What is the format for the round of 16 of the World Cup?

The matchups for the round of 32 will depend on the groups from which the eight third-place teams emerge. From this stage onwards, the tournament will only feature single elimination matches.
