Royals pitcher falls to the ground after being hit with a 107 mph line drive, but that’s not all

Kansas City Royals pitcher Seth Lugo exited Wednesday’s game after taking a 107 mph line drive to the head in another of those Major League Baseball “hold your breath” scenes.

I feel like we get about five of these a year and they’re all hard to watch. Frankly, I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often. I’ve always been surprised by that. I played baseball for 15 years at all levels and NEVER saw a pitcher take a line drive to the head.

Again, I feel like it should happen much more often than it does, but I appreciate that it seems rare.

Anyway, let’s go back to Lugo…

GUARDIANS PITCHER ESCAPES MINOR SERIOUS INJURIES AFTER 106.6 MPH LINE COMES STRAIGHT TOWARD HIS HEAD

Brandon Nimmo hit his face with a scorcher Wednesday night in Kansas City, and Lugo immediately fell to the ground. Nimmo, who was a teammate of Lugo’s with the Mets, was visibly shaken as he ran toward first base. He can be seen removing his helmet and waving his arms after Lugo fell.

After touching the bag, Nimmo immediately called time and ran toward his former teammate on the mound in one of the most elegant moves of the season.

Seth Lugo ‘doing fine’ after scary moment

My God. Scary things. It’s surprising that Lugo got up as quickly as he did. And how about that WELT on your head?

I didn’t know that hives could form. that quickly. It has to be some kind of record in terms of hive formation. That thing was MASSIVE after three seconds.

Good for Nimmo for immediately running over to check on his former teammate too.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that either. The batter just running toward the mound right after touching first base? You can see the respect he has for Lugo.

It also shows you what kind of guy Brandon Nimmo is. The veteran has the reputation of being one of the best guys in all of Major League Baseball, and I believe it after seeing that.

Anyway, all’s well that ends well. Terrifying scene, but Lugo (somehow) emerged unscathed. The Royals later said he was “fine” but would put him through proper protocols before his next outing. His CT scan on Wednesday night came back clear.

“I was pretty shocked,” Lugo said of Nimmo’s reaction. “I was really just trying to calm him down. ‘I’m fine, Nimms.’ It’s always been a love like that. As a friend of mine, I felt for him. You’ve hit guys before as a pitcher and you feel bad. So it was an unfortunate situation, but it’s all good.”
