Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has issued a warning against giving too much power and value to AI models.
In a post shared on X, Nadella described how giving a small number of AI companies control over important data and information could cause widespread economic problems for companies of all sizes.
“The last thing we want is a world in which all companies in all sectors are giving up value to a few models that eat everything in sight,” he warned, “if all the value is accumulated by just a few models, the political economy simply will not tolerate it. There is no social permission for an AI future that destroys entire industries.”
The AI ”transition”
In his article, titled “A frontier without an ecosystem is not stable,” Nadella compared the current demand for AI and the growth that is considered equivalent to the increase in globalization seen in the 20th century.
Nadella highlighted how globalization was positive for some, as it boosted economic indicators in many countries, but also led to a loss of jobs in other areas and the end of some industrial economies as priorities and approaches changed.
“This transition is unlike any previous platform change,” he said, “In the past, we used digital systems to enhance human capital. This is the first time we can create a real cognitive loop between people and digital systems. That’s crazy, because it changes even the way we conceptualize work within a company.”
“What is at stake is not some digital tool or system and its use, but how organizations continue to learn, build intellectual property, differentiate and thrive in a world where AI models can continually absorb the experience of humans and organizations and turn it into a commodity.”
Nadella said the AI industry has an opportunity to learn from past mistakes made in the era of globalization, and that companies must continue to monitor their internal learning and experience systems while benefiting from AI-driven innovation.
“In my opinion, our priority has to be building a frontier ecosystem, not just a frontier model, so that value flows widely between all companies, all industries and all countries,” he declared. “One in which each organization can possess the learning circuit that codifies its institutional knowledge, aggravating its human and symbolic capital.”
“When that happens, companies will create value for themselves and the economy around them.”
Nadella’s post comes shortly after Microsoft Build 2026, where the company laid out its plans for the coming years in terms of new software and hardware.
At the event, Mustafa Suelyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, outlined the company’s reasoning in its AI development, noting that its work would always seek to support human workers and users, not replace them, as it seeks to create what the company calls “humanistic superintelligence.”
