US Open first round suspended due to fog, play resumes at 9:05 a.m. ET

The first round of the 2026 US Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club was affected by an unexpected interruption.

The game was delayed by dense fog that rolled in, forcing officials to suspend play after 30 minutes of the first tee shot.

The horn sounded at 7:05 a.m. ET and all activity ceased as conditions became much more difficult to see. It turned out that only 14 of 156 players were able to finish a hole at the time of the break, and there was not a single birdie on the scoreboard.

Play resumed at 9:05 a.m. ET after a delay of exactly two hours. The US Open X account announced the restart and noted that the practice ranges were open in the morning.

Even though play has resumed, golfers still face challenges. The National Weather Service has indicated a 40% chance of precipitation and possible thunderstorms with wind gusts up to 30 mph.

The previous time the US Open first round was postponed due to foggy weather was in 2021 at Torrey Pines, and the delay lasted 90 minutes. Friday will be characterized by clouds giving way to clear skies, while Saturday and Sunday will be mostly sunny with winds ranging between 10 and 20 mph.
