Proton has launched a new Easy Switch for Business tool to help businesses migrate from Google Workspace with minimal disruption and downtime, as a growing number of businesses look to turn their backs on Big Tech.
The announcement comes as European companies are especially looking to find alternatives to American software giants, amid concerns about data privacy, regulatory compliance and broader technological sovereignty.
Proton says its Easy Switch tool is intended to address some of the challenges businesses are most concerned about when making the switch, such as operational disruption and costs.
While Proton’s product offering also includes Drive, Docs, and Sheets, this tool relates specifically to email, calendars, and contacts.
Importantly, Google Workspace and Proton run simultaneously during the migration, so there are no interruptions. Users can continue normally while the change is made without experiencing interruptions or interruptions.
It also means that administrators and IT teams can move selected user accounts first and onboard teams in stages while running the two suites at the same time, giving them time to make sure everything is working as expected.
Proton boasted that more than 100,000 organizations – including newsrooms, law firms, technology companies, consultancies, NGOs and government agencies – have already migrated to its platform.
The company currently does not offer a similar tool for Drive and the documents it contains, instead forcing users to export from Google Drive and upload them back to Proton Drive.
More importantly, Proton does not have any migration or bulk export system for its Drive for users looking to move away from the platform. Due to file-by-file encryption, users must open and download each file individually.
