- The country of Georgia has finally arrived on Google Street View
- Google has highlighted several important places worth seeing.
- Images are available on Google Maps and Google Earth.
Street View is still expanding, almost 20 years after Google first launched it, and the Eastern European country of Georgia is the latest to be added to the platform, with some spectacular sites and landmarks included, plus all the roads and highways.
“Georgia is a country defined by the scale of its history and the spectacular diversity of its landscapes,” says Google, which worked with the Georgian government to include the country on the Street View map.
About 13,000 kilometers (8,078 miles) of roads have been added, which can be found on Google Maps and Google Earth. You can visit the Jvari Monastery (part of the UNESCO World Heritage), the medieval stone towers of Ushguli and the Bridge of Peace across the Kura River in the capital Tbilisi.
There is also Telavi in the Kakheti region, the center of a winemaking tradition in Georgia that dates back 8,000 years. Grapes from these vineyards are still fermented in traditional clay jars called qvevri, which are buried underground.
Another level of GeoGuessr
Another place worth seeing: the Jvari Pass, high in the mountains, which is part of the Greater Caucasus mountain range. Take a few minutes to click on the new Street View images and you’ll find plenty of fantastic views.
Of course, it is not necessary to visit the most important tourist places or the most well-known roads. In Google Maps on the web, simply drag the little yellow man (below right) somewhere on the map; Hovering over will turn Street View roads blue, and that now includes Georgia.
In addition to checking out possible places to travel to, the new images are also a great help for GeoGuessr players trying to name the country from a Street View image. One sign calls it a “beautiful country” that is a “great addition.”
While many of us will be used to Street View imagery in our part of the world, it’s not everywhere yet. Countries like Cyprus and Paraguay were added just last year, while China and many African and Middle Eastern nations are missing.
