Dragon House Season 3 premiered on HBO Max, and the latest entry of the high fantasy show has already highlighted that no one will be safe from this point on.
Titled ‘Salt and Sea, Fire and Blood’, the first episode of this season ends up being a deadly, blood-soaked episode by virtue of one of the show’s most brutal conflicts to date. That is the naval clash known as The Battle of the Gorge.
Does Jace die in the House of the Dragon season 3 premiere?
Yes. Jace, or, to give him his full name, Jacaerys Targaryen, is the most notable victim of this season’s first installment.
Except for a couple of substantial changes in the way his death plays out in Fire and bloodalso known as the book written by George RR Martin that Dragon House On which it is based, Jace’s disappearance is a direct adaptation of the events that also occur in said novel.
In fact, in the aforementioned book and television reimagining, Jace dies after being shot several times by crossbowmen aboard one of the Triarchy’s ships. That happens after his dragon Vermax crashes into the sea and drowns, and Jace, who frees himself from Vermax before he sinks beneath the waves, finds some driftwood to hold on to.
the way I screamed when the first arrow hit him even though I knew it was coming… oh jace 💔 #HOTD pic.twitter.com/83GzSuPhtdJune 22, 2026
The changes made to Martin’s texts concern the way the build-up to Jace’s death is portrayed.
For a start, Fire and blood It does not explicitly state how or why Vermax falls into the sea. He claims that Vermax is seen flying too close to the waves and could have plummeted into the waters below after being wounded by a ballista bolt or knocked down by a grapnel. In the HBO Max version of The Battle of the Gullet, a combination of the two (a giant crossbow with a heavy stone weight attached by a chain) is ultimately what drags Vermax into the sea.
The events leading up to that moment are also the root cause of Jace and Vermax’s deaths, due to the arrival of Rhaena Targaryen and Sheepstealer, aka the great dragon she has been trying to tame.
In Fire and bloodSheepstealer is part of The Battle of the Gullet, but is ridden by a mysterious individual known as Nettles. By the way, it seems that showrunner Ryan Condal has combined Rhaena and Nettles into one person for the purpose of Dragon HouseThe narrative.
But I digress. After Rhaena appears to finally tame Sheepstealer at the beginning of the season 3 premiere of the HBO Max series, the pair stumble upon The Battle of the Gorge. Seeing this as an opportunity to prove herself, Rhaena orders Sheepstealer to join the fray. Unfortunately, the still-indomitable Sheepstealer takes a two-sided approach to proceedings and begins raining fire on the Triarchy, aka the enemy, and the Velaryon ships, which is who they are supposed to protect.
Mistaking Rhaena and Sheepstealer for enemies, Jace/Vermax, along with Baela Targaryen and his dragon Moondancer, move to intercept and eliminate them. Bottom line: Jace/Vermax get so caught up in the ensuing aerial skirmish that they don’t notice the upcoming heavy bolt attack that will soon take their lives.
Is Triarchy commander Sharako Lohar dead in House of the Dragon?
Yes, and this represents another deviation from Fire and bloodRepresentation of The Battle of the Gorge.
In ‘Sea and Salt, Fire and Blood’, Lohar loses her life after a duel with Alyn of Hull, who seeks her out after what Lohar does to her estranged father and commander of the Velaryon fleet, Corlys Velaryon (more on him later). After a frantic fight aboard a sinking ship, Alyn finally wins by fatally stabbing Lohar and letting her body sink into the depths.
However, in Fire and Blood, Lohar not only survives the Battle of the Gorge, but is said to have won it. In literature, Lohar is eventually murdered by a rival some years later after The Daughters’ War, also known as a civil war between the factions of the Triarchy. With Dragon House Although it is not expected to cover this event as part of its overall story, it makes sense for the game of Thrones prequel to kill Lohar during The Battle of the Gorge.
Is Corlys Velaryon, aka the Sea Serpent, dead in House of the Dragon?
We don’t know yet, because Corlys’ fate is unknown as season 3, episode 1 ends. In fact, after he is thrown overboard during his own confrontation with Lohar, we never see him again.
So, is Corlys dead or alive? I’d rather not spoil that surprise, dear reader. The only thing I’ll refer to is the old entertainment business phrase “no body, no death”: that is, if we don’t physically see someone’s dead body on screen, chances are their time hasn’t come yet…
What happens to Tyland Lannister and Jason Lannister in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 1?
The same principle applies to one of the Lannister twins in Tyland.
In fact, after Lohar’s flagship, also known as Bitchfist, chased Corlys’ ship through a dangerous and extremely narrow rocky passage at low tide, the former nearly crashed onto the rocks. In an attempt to reduce the Bitchfist’s weight and help it float better to avoid the jagged rocks below, Lohar pushes the heavily armored Tyland overboard. So, like Corlys, Tyland’s fate is unclear.
However, we can’t say the same about his brother Jason. At the end of a battle in the Riverlands in which Daemon Targaryen’s forces triumph over Jason’s, we learn that the latter has been killed and beheaded by Roderick Dustin. He is the leader of the Winter Wolves, who swear allegiance to Team Black, also known as those who have sided with Rhaenyra Targaryen in the midst of the Targaryen Civil War, also known as the Dance of Dragons.
