Xander Schauffele advances the Travelers Championship after the US Open

Xander Schauffele, along with dozens of others, is about to have a lot more fun this upcoming weekend in New England than he did last in the Hamptons.

After the Shinnecock Hills grind for the US Open, the PGA Tour will stop at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, for a player favorite in the exclusive Travelers Championship.

Only three players finished under par in the third major of the golf season, but the Travelers, almost conspicuously, are the opposite. Two years ago, Scottie Scheffler’s 22-under victory came after a playoff, and this is where Jim Furyk shot his 58.

“To be honest, I didn’t even care about the rain today,” Schauffele, the 2022 Travelers winner, told Pak Gazette Digital after practicing Tuesday.

Sure, some of that is probably just moving away from Shinnecock (Schauffele’s +2 was good for a T11 finish). But everything about the first event following the US Open is what makes it the two-time Grand Slam winner’s favorite.

Don’t expect scores in the -20s this weekend (Keegan Bradley won at -15 last year), as the course has gotten a little tougher. A 58 may not be in the cards either.

But that’s exactly how Schauffele likes it.

“There are a lot of tough spots where you feel like you’re supposed to make shots and sometimes you don’t. But it’s a fun course,” Schauffele said. “If you can get in the zone, you can shoot seven or eight under par and there are some days where you’ll be like, you know, even one over and you’ll be like, man, I feel like I’m missing all these shots.

“So I think the changes on the course have been great, narrowing down certain spots, getting tougher at certain spots. So I definitely think we’ve enjoyed, you know, kind of a teen victory.”

It’s not just the track layout, but also the behind-the-scenes aspects of the event that keep the Tour’s top stars coming back for more.

“Everything from the food to the coffee on the stove, the coffee they bring to the dining room, the food, there’s a treat when you check in for you and your wife,” Schauffele said, “They go out of their way to make you feel warm and almost like a family when you’re on the property.”

The Travelers tee off on Thursday morning and Schauffele will be paired with three-time Ryder Cup teammate Collin Morikawa at 10:55 a.m. ET.
