Halo Studios has confirmed that The Halo campaign evolved still have Halo: Evolved CombatThe original code is buried beneath the new Unreal Engine 5 build.
That’s according to executive producer Damon Conn and creative director Max Szlagor in an interview with TechRadar Gaming at Summer Game Fest 2026, where they discussed how the team recaptured the feel of the original game while creating a modern shooter.
Conn explained that he also addressed some of the encounters and made sure to “reduce” their “repetition.”
“I don’t want to alter the overall story or the way the game plays out,” he clarified, “but just make it feel better. Some of the levels are a little repetitive, and we tried to clean up that as well. Keeping that original feel.”
The executive producer continued, confirming that the “original code” of Halo: Evolved Combat “is in this game, under the new Unreal Engine 5.
“It’s under a layer of Unreal, so you’re playing with the DNA of the original game,” Conn said.
Touching the Library in particular, the labyrinthine levels in Halo: Evolved Combat featuring waves of The Flood, Conn said every space and encounter is now “visually distinct.”
“At each level, you can see how it progresses over time,” he explained. “You can see how the types of Flood you encounter on each floor change. We’ve also leaned into other facets of what it means to be in the Library. There’s also some new gameplay layered into those spaces. You’ll see a new form of Flood there. Again, new weapons are layered here.
“There are really many different elements that happen while preserving that history, that original intention. The lighting [for example] it’s really driving the vibes of what The Library is too. Going through that level should be a very new experience.”
The Halo campaign evolved launches on July 28 for PS5, Xbox Series X, Series S and PC.
