- The Halo campaign evolved will also include original content and new features
- Creative director Max Szlagor says the remake was a process of “working it out piece by piece.”
- The game will be “more accessible” than the original
The Halo campaign evolved It is not just a simple new version of Halo: Evolved CombatThe campaign, according to Halo Studios, is a combination of original content and new features designed for a modern shooter.
In an interview with TechRadar Gaming at Summer Game Fest 2026, where we got a taste of the upcoming game, executive producer Damon Conn and creative director Max Szlagor explained how the team brought back the feel of the original game and the challenges of turning it into a new experience.
“It’s a combination [..] from this Halo simulation, which we have built for 25 years, mainly from [Halo] Reachbut adding additional pieces and combining them with this beautiful Unreal [Engine] renderer,” Szlagor said. “As far as the challenges, it’s really just looking at it piece by piece as we build the levels, the enemy encounters, vehicles and weapons.
“It’s a lot of stuff that we’ve put together. We have all the original content plus these nine new weapons, which you couldn’t use in the original game, so making sure they fit well with the Energy Sword, the Fuel Rod cannon, the Wraith, [and] vehicle hijacking. “Just working it out piece by piece.”
Conn explained that the “key” is to “make it a more modern shooter,” which means “making it more accessible” by revamping old features to make them more accessible.
“Now you can find your way through the levels a little more easily,” the developer added, “whereas in the early 2000s, you had to find your way, and it was really trial and error. Now we have much more poignant waypoints to help you.”
There will also be quality of life features built with Unreal Engine 5, including a speed button, but players can also play “the original way” by turning off the option.
“I like to run and use it as a crossover feature,” Conn said. “It doesn’t really change the way I’m going to play, but it definitely allows me to move around the environment in a way that I’m more accustomed to.”
The Halo campaign evolved launches on July 28 for PS5, Xbox Series X, Series S and PC.
