- Windows 11 File Explorer is getting major improvements via the latest preview update
- File Explorer should work much faster, including mounting disk images
- The update is currently being implemented.
Microsoft is still working hard to fix Windows 11 pain points for its users. While this case does not focus on improvements in games, it addresses an issue that should improve one of the fundamental aspects of the operating system.
As reported by Windows Latest, Microsoft is rolling out improvements to File Explorer with its latest preview update, KB5095093. The update includes much better File Explorer speed and performance and greater responsiveness when mounting disk images.
This is a long-awaited update for Windows 11 users, as File Explorer hasn’t always been the fastest or most responsive, especially compared to macOS or SteamOS, both of which have fairly responsive file managers.
It’s also worth noting that PC hardware, specifically SSD speeds and storage space, can have an impact on loading times. Still, Microsoft has taken it upon itself to fix its Windows 11 File Explorer, which has been noticeably slow even with a high-speed SSD, making this update much needed.
Perhaps the biggest improvement being rolled out is better performance for mounting disk images, which was arguably the worst aspect of Windows 11’s File Explorer. This would often result in a five-minute wait for the disk image to fully open, and that’s frustrating, especially for users with high-speed hardware.
Windows Latest also highlights that a file’s ‘Properties’ tab will see a visual overhaul, with a more modern look using WinUI 3, as opposed to the Windows 95-era user interface.
It’s great to see Microsoft addressing these issues, seemingly as a broader attempt to improve the functionality and appearance of Windows 11 due to constant user complaints. There’s certainly still more to be desired in the game performance aspect, but Microsoft should take praise where it’s due.
My only concern is a possible update that could undo all the hard work, as Windows 11 updates are known for breaking functionality, whether through File Explorer or when it comes to GPU stability, which have previously plagued Nvidia GPU users.
