Jailed PTI leaders urge AJK to vote

The letter says that the party must publish the names of all the candidates who will be its endorsed candidates.

ISLAMABAD:

Jailed senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders on Thursday urged the party leadership to participate in the upcoming Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections, asking the party to field PTI-backed candidates despite legal uncertainty surrounding their status.

According to party sources, jailed PTI leaders, including Dr Yasmin Rashid and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, sent a letter to the party president and general secretary requesting the party to remain in the electoral process.

The message was conveyed to the leaders through their legal advisor.

According to the content of the letter, the imprisoned leaders held consultations on the AJK elections before reaching a consensus on the issue.

“We have inquired about the Azad Kashmir elections and have come to the conclusion,” the letter states.

“We have decided that the candidates supported by the PTI will participate in the electoral process,” he added.

The letter further urges the party to publicly announce the names of all the candidates who would contest the elections with the backing of the PTI.

“The party should publish the names of all candidates who will be its endorsed candidates,” the letter said.

The call comes as the PTI announced that it would not participate in the AJK elections given the prevailing political circumstances, saying it would stay away from the electoral process until normalcy was restored in the region.
