Avengers: Secret Wars is set to bring down the curtain on Marvel’s wildly inconsistent Multiverse saga. And, although the long-awaited film will not hit theaters until December 17, 2027, those involved in its production have already confirmed some details about its plot, cast and eventual impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Lucky for you, I’ve rounded up the latest and greatest news about the sixth Avengers movie in this guide. So if you just can’t wait to find out all the details about this year’s sequel Avengers: Judgment Daykeep reading.
Avengers: Secret Wars release date
Avengers: Secret Wars will be released in theaters around the world on December 17, 2027.
It was originally supposed to come out on May 7, 2027; Marvel confirmed this during their Hall H panel at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). However, in May 2025, Marvel announced Doomsday and secret wars It would be delayed seven months. The first, which was due to come out on May 1, 2026, will now come out on December 18, 2026, with secret wars debuting almost exactly a year later.
Marvel has never explained why its releases were delayed. However, the sheer scale of these productions, plus the criticism leveled at Marvel Studios over the varying quality of their Multiverse Saga projects, means that they need as much development time as possible to be as good as we hope.
Avengers: Secret Wars trailer: is there one?
No, and we definitely won’t see one before. Avengers: Judgment Day is released. After all, Marvel isn’t going to spoil what happens in the aforementioned movie before we get to see it.
My best guess is that a short trailer will make its world premiere during Marvel’s Hall H panel at SDCC 2027, before a full trailer is revealed much closer to Avengers: Secret Wars‘ release date. In short, we will be waiting a long time to see some images.
Avengers: Secret Wars cast: confirmed and rumored
Avengers: Secret Wars‘ the cast has not been confirmed because, again, that would ruin who will survive the events of Avengers: Judgment Day.
However, some actors have already ruined the surprise by confirming that they will appear again. Avengers 6. Additionally, some respected media outlets have also reported on other people who might appear. Potentially huge spoilers immediately follow for secret warsso continue reading at your own risk:
- Robert Downey Jr as Doctor Victor von Doom
- Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/original Captain America
- Chris Hemsworth as Thor
- Paul Bettany as vision
- Simu Liu as Shang-Chi
- Letitia Wright as Shuri/Black Panther
- Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing
- Sadie Sink as TBC
Needless to say, Downey Jr’s Doom will be returning. He’s the big bad of the two-part conclusion to the Multiverse saga, so he’ll be back for round two.
Meanwhile, Evans confirmed that he will be part of the process in a video call with a fan. MCU series leaker Mark Ruffalo, who plays Bruce Banner/Hulk in the Marvel film franchise, also let slip that Hemsworth’s Thor will appear in secret wars.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who plays Ben Grimm/The Thing, announced her participation by saying that filming will begin in August, so we will see at least one member of the Fantastic Four in secret wars. Speaking to people.com, Simu Liu also revealed that Shang-Chi is involved in Avengers 6while Letitia Wright told ScreenRant that she will also appear.
Additionally, Paul Bettany told The Telegraph that “he has some Avengers homework” to do, which all but confirms that she’s part of the cast. Lastly, rumors abound that Sadie Sink will have a role to play in secret wars after the debut of his mysterious character in Spider-Man: New Day.
There will surely be more casting announcements, including confirmation that one of Marvel’s most bankable stars, Tom Holland, who plays Peter Parker and his superhero alias Spider-Man, will appear (N.B: For what it’s worth, Holland has already announced that he will participate.) Once more details about this film’s ensemble come to light, I will update this section.
Avengers: Secret Wars story speculation
As expected, Marvel has not revealed secret wars‘story synopsis yet. However, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have given hints about what we can expect.
To start, the Russo brothers, who also run secret wars‘ predecessor: To find out more about it, find out everything we know so far about Avengers: Judgment Day – told me exclusively that they will “take inspiration” from the two stories in Marvel’s Secret Wars comic.
The literary pairing, which came to light in 1984 and 2015, shares some narrative similarities (for example, they both explore the Marvel Multiverse), but they mainly tell different stories. Expect the Russos to select elements from both comic runs to help them tell their own original story.
Again, it’s unclear how his narrative will play out. However, last March, a major leak of Marvel concept art surfaced that gave us our first look at what could happen in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The images were only active for a short period before being taken offline, suggesting they were legitimate. That said, the vast majority of previous artwork is never used in a film or television show, so it’s possible that it was never used further during the development process.
On the recent rumors front, Marvel’s final Phase 6 project will not be split into two. It was speculated that, given the importance and scale of its plot, as well as how many characters could be involved, Avengers: Secret Wars It could become its own duology. Marvel has remained tight-lipped about this, but numerous trusted industry insiders have shot down this particular piece of gossip since it surfaced in February, so it’s highly unlikely to happen.
Anyway, once Avengers 5 is launched, we will have a clearer idea of what secret wars‘ the plot will involve. Until then, the above is the best information available to us.
How will Avengers: Secret Wars affect the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
The most likely scenario would involve something like a reboot of the MCU as we know it.
There’s no denying that Marvel’s cinematic juggernaut has become more unwieldy with each phase. The introduction of more and more heroes and villains (not all of whom have proven popular with audiences), plus the painstaking amount of homework required of viewers before seeing one of Marvel’s new movies in theaters or TV shows on Disney+, means that a reboot of the comic book giant’s film franchise would be welcomed by hardcore fans and newcomers alike.
Looks like we’ll get it too. The Russos have suggested that the next two Avengers movies will be a “new beginning” for the MCU. Additionally, Marvel president Kevin Feige told Variety that MCU 2.0 will return to a “singular timeline” that, among other things, will introduce viewers to a new version of the X-Men, aka the comic titan’s famous mutant superteam.
It remains to be seen which established characters will make the jump to the new MCU, but I’d be surprised if fan favorites like Spider-Man aren’t a part of it. Add in the likely recasting of Black Panther, the retention of the Fantastic Four, and the introduction of new heroes currently popular in Marvel Comics, and the MCU is going nowhere soon after. Avengers: Secret Wars.
