Are you looking for a different day?
A new NYT Strands puzzle appears at midnight every day for your time zone, which means some people are always playing “today’s game” while others play “yesterday’s.” If instead you are looking for the Saturday puzzle then click here: NYT Strands Tips and Answers for Saturday, July 4 (Game #853).
Strands is the latest NYT word game after Wordle, Spelling Bee, and Connections, and it’s a lot of fun. It can be difficult, though, so read on for my Strands suggestions.

NYT Strands Today (Game #854): The Answers
The answers to today’s Strands game #854 are…
- POINTER
- SPANIEL
- TERRIER
- HOUND
- RECEIVER
- SPANGRAM: RACE HUNTING
- My rating: Easy
- My score: Perfect
My immediate thought was that the topic had to have something to do with dogs, but I was careful, of course, to fall into a trap and bark up the wrong tree.
After spotting POINTER, it seemed clear that we were looking for dog breeds, but my dog knowledge wasn’t good enough to know we were looking for HUNTING BREEDS until I plugged in SPANIEL and TERRIER and then the spangram.
Beyond the game itself, there was also an interesting crop of non-game long words. It’s rare to find many with more than five letters, but today the board was full of them.
Answers from yesterday’s NYT Strands (Saturday, July 4, game #853)
- BRIGHT
- COLORFUL
- DAZZLING
- EXCITING
- SPARKLING
- SPANGRAM: FIREWORKS
