With SEC Fight Over, Coinbase’s Top Legal Executive Grewal Moves On, Others Reassigned

Coinbase Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal is leaving the company after his high-profile, years-long legal fight with US regulators, and the US exchange also announced more changes to its senior leadership.

Grewal is leaving to work at a startup, according to a Thursday announcement from Coinbase. Molly Abraham will now lead the company’s legal team as general counsel, and Ryan Van Grack will become vice president, in what is anticipated to be a broader, public-facing role.

“Leading Coinbase’s legal team through our industry’s largest fight has been the greatest accomplishment of my six-year tenure,” Grewal said in a statement. “Our legal victories helped ensure that cryptocurrencies not only had a future in this country, but that they could flourish.”

His statement went on to say that he would continue as an advisor to Coinbase and would work on Coinbase’s trust charter through the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

Abraham has been at Coinbase since March 2021, leading various legal teams as the company’s vice president of legal. Before that, she was general counsel at an electric flying car startup, according to her LinkedIn.
