Yesterday, Activision gave us the surprise launch of not one, but two. Obligations ports. You can now buy the original. Covert operations and its acclaimed follow-up, Black Ops 2, on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 for the first time.
They upgrade the resolution of both games on these newer consoles (a substantial step up from the native 608p image quality of the backwards compatible versions available on Xbox), but otherwise look nearly identical to their original incarnations.
Even some major features that many fans thought would be removed, like Black Ops 2The infamous creator of the emblem, are present and accounted for.
I bought copies of both games immediately with my own money (they’re currently having an irresistible 50% discount if you have PS Plus) and spent most of last night playing on my PS5. Aside from the sharper image quality, they are just as I remember them.
I also recently replayed the original versions of both games, via second-hand physical copies I purchased for my Xbox Series X to refresh my knowledge of both games before release. Black ops 7 launch — This last entry is a Black Ops 2 sequel, after all.
However, some fans are not as impressed and argue that the games just don’t feel right.
“Covert operations 1 PS5 has a serious controller input lag issue that needs to be fixed [sic] and fixed,” argued one poster on r/callofduty. “Surely it wasn’t that bad on PS3.”
“Sounds like the original release,” another fan responded, and someone else chimed in: “The Golden Days” and a wry sobbing emoji.
“B.O.I always felt difficult to aim even in the old days compared to BO2. “I’m pretty sure this is normal,” someone else added.
Another post similarly acknowledges that “The responsiveness is terrible. I clearly remember the original Covert operations I feel a lot sharper than this.” The top commenter agrees, complaining that “I’m losing every shootout because my gun doesn’t fire in time.”
While that all seems fine to me, there’s definitely a chance that those playing at specific resolutions, on specific TVs, or with features like VRR enabled will have a much worse experience. I expect some patches to be released in the coming weeks if these claims hold up.
