Brenda Fricker, the first Irish woman to win an Oscar, dies

Brenda Fricker, the first Irish actress to win an Oscar, died at the age of 81 on Thursday night, her agent confirmed on Friday. The Dublin-born actress died after a prolonged illness.

Her agent, Phil Belfield, expressed his sadness at the acting sensation’s death, stating that “the world seems smaller without her.” Belfield said it was an honor to have known her and worked with her.

Fricker won an Oscar in 1990 for his role in a low-budget film, My Left Foot. She played Christy Brown’s mother.

One of his jokes during the acceptance speech left its mark on the audience. Holding the trophy, she joked: “A woman who has given birth 22 times deserves one of these.”

Fricker did not begin her career as an actress but as a journalist. He landed his first screen role in 1964 in Ireland’s first soap opera, Tolka Row. He also spent four years in The BBC Victim playing nurse Megan Roach.

Her moment of fame came after she won the Academy Award. She went on to play some of the memorable roles in Home Alone 2, So I Married an Ax Murderer, Angels in the Country and A Time to Kill.

Aside from the screen, his personal life was a complete disaster. She revealed that she was abused as a child, then married a drug-addicted husband, suffered six miscarriages and attempted to take her own life more than 30 times.

In a 2025 interview, he described his situation: “I’m dying, in pain every day.”
