ann droid is a new BBC comedy created by and starring Diane Morgan, best known for her roles as Philomena Cunk and Mandy, as well as projects such as Homeland and after life. Now, she brings her impeccable comedic timing to a family sci-fi series and potentially another memorable character in Linda.
A clever play on words, An-Droid begins when widow Sue’s son, Michael, gives her a second-hand care robot, Linda, played by Morgan, to help her live independently. Although Sue is initially hesitant to accept the robot into her home, Linda’s unusual charm eventually helps the couple develop an unexpected bond, despite her obvious lack of help.
In addition to Morgan’s trademark deadpan humor, the series also aims to explore serious topics such as aging, loneliness and grief, as well as the growing impact of modern technology and artificial intelligence on everyday life.
“I definitely think we will have robots taking care of us in the future. I can’t say if they will end up killing us or not,” Morgan said when asked about his opinion on AI robots.
