The mutants are coming. In fact, with Marvel hard at work developing another X-Men movie, one that will officially introduce a new version of the superteam to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it won’t be long before they return to the big screen. Well, as long as you don’t consider its possible launch in 2028 to be a long wait…
But I digress. With San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2026 almost around the corner and speculation that some sort of X-Men announcement will be made at the fan expo, interest in the upcoming live-action X-Men movie couldn’t be higher. Read on to find out everything we know so far about the movie that will likely usher in version 2.0 of the MCU.
X-Men Movie Release Date: What We Know
Kevin Feige Confirms Jake Schreier’s ‘X-MEN’ Movie Releases After ‘AVENGERS: SECRET WARS’ “I can’t wait for everyone to see ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ we have a movie next called ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ and after that comes the mutants and the X-Men and… pic.twitter.com/pw9u54BEEBJuly 11, 2026
Marvel has not yet confirmed the release date of its X-Men movie. After all, it’s still in the early stages of development, so unless there’s a surprise announcement at SDCC 2026, it’ll be some time before we know more.
That being said, this movie is high on Marvel’s priority list. Speaking in late 2024, company president Kevin Feige said that the future of the MCU will have to do with the X-Men after the Multiverse saga comes to an end next year. Avengers: Secret Wars.
More recently, Feige hinted (see X/Twitter post above) that the new X-Men movie will be the first film to arrive after the sixth Avengers installment. Since that movie is set to release in December 2027, we shouldn’t expect the MCU’s first mutant-led project until sometime in 2028.
Marvel’s X-Men movie trailer: is there one?
As expected, no. In fact, assuming Marvel returns to the Hall H panel at SDCC 2028, I’d be surprised if we get official images before then.
Once a trailer is released I’ll update this section, but you’ll be waiting a long time for one!
Rumors about Marvel’s X-Men casting
Possible spoilers for Marvel’s X-Men movie follow.
As expected, no one has yet been confirmed to appear in Marvel’s X-Men movie. However, many rumors have emerged (and continue to circulate) about who is involved, so let’s take a look at some of the biggest ones.
For starters, a report that circulated in July 2025 suggested that Marvel was looking at rising stars rather than established names for its X-Men reboot. The reason? The Disney subsidiary wants to make movies for less, and that means it’s not looking to pay more than expected for top stars.
And yet, the vast majority of actors who have been linked to roles in Marvel’s mutant-starring movie are what I would consider household names.
One of those stars is stranger things former student Sadie Sink. After being cast as a mysterious character in Spider-Man: New Daythe long-standing rumor is that Sink will play Jean Grey. If that’s true, and there’s now plenty of evidence to suggest it is, we’ll almost certainly see it in this movie.
Who else could appear? Last May, the rumor mills were abuzz with reports about other potential X-Men cast members, including speculation that Bryan Cranston would play Charles Xavier/Professor
However, other actors have since been linked to two of those roles. In mid-July, Adam Driver was said to have been cast as Magneto, while Patrick Wilson is reportedly in the frame as Professor X (according to Knightedgemedia). For what it’s worth, trusted industry expert Apocalyptic Horseman said the latter might not be true.
Elsewhere, Obsession Star Inde Navarrette revealed that she had recently met with new X-Men director Jake Schreier, leading fans to cast her in a variety of mutant roles. Meanwhile, after unreliable leaker Jeff Sneider claimed that Avatar Trinity star Jo-Li Bliss had been cast as Jubilee, Bliss herself denied the report (via The Direct).
Lastly, Lee Sung Jin, one of the co-writers of this film, told Collider that he is a big fan of Remy LeBeau/Gambit. So, don’t be surprised if we see a new version of the Ragin’ Cajun as part of this film’s ensemble.
Rumors about the plot of Marvel’s X-Men movie
You know what I’m going to say here, right? Surprise, surprise, Marvel’s X-Men reboot still doesn’t have a story synopsis.
However, thanks to Schreier and Jin, we got a glimpse into their creative process for the film, including the key inspiration behind the story they want to tell.
In a conversation with Deadline, Jin also explained that Feige wants him, co-writer Joanna Calo, and Schreier to “take a big step and start over.” [and] “I’m not beholden to any of the previous films.”
Expect an all-new version – in a live-action sense, at least – of the iconic supergroup created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby when their next film hits theaters.

You can watch all the live-action X-Men movies at Disney+, also known as one of the best streaming services in the world. Disney’s flagship streamer has been home to these movies since the House of Mouse purchased 20th Century Fox in March 2019. What does the future hold for the X-Men in the MCU?
In short: we have no idea. Marvel has yet to get this movie off the ground and, as Schreier explained during an interview with Collider must be a huge success if the franchise wants to continue into Marvel’s Phase 7 and beyond.
If successful, the X-Men could become one of the cornerstones of the next era of the MCU. But if it’s not like that? Frankly, that’s a scenario not worth thinking about. The X-Men are one of the most popular superhero teams of all time, so if they can’t help support Marvel’s cinematic giant in a post-Multiverse Saga world, who can?
