- Windows 10 21H2 and earlier lose support for all OneDrive updates

Microsoft has announced that it will end updates to the OneDrive sync app on Windows 10 version 21H2 and earlier starting August 15, 2026.
In addition to not offering new features, affected devices will also be incompatible with new bug fixes and security updates, marking the official end of OneDrive on those devices.
The app will still work after losing update support, but system changes and emerging errors could make it unfixable over time.
Windows 10 is starting to lose its support for OneDrive syncing
Starting with the August 2026 deadline, users may experience reduced functionality, compatibility issues, and security risks, and the company is instead pushing Windows 11 as a viable alternative to keep OneDrive working as expected.
Some later versions of the current operating system, including version 22H2, will continue to receive feature, reliability, and security updates until October 10, 2028. 22H2 was the final version of Windows 10; The next update after that represents a completely new operating system that brings with it some hardware limitations.
“This change aligns OneDrive support with the Windows lifecycle policy and helps Microsoft focus its continued investments on supported operating systems,” Microsoft wrote in a support article.
Users who are reluctant to update the operating system could still access OneDrive through the browser if the app ends up crashing due to an incompatibility.
Instead of giving advice to make OneDrive compatible with Windows 10, Microsoft is urging affected users to finally upgrade to Windows 11. Windows 10 still accounts for around 28% of all Windows installations (according to Statcounter), compared to 70% for Windows 11.
