Private Internet Access (PIA) has just announced that network infrastructure updates will be rolling out to parts of its system and is asking users to update their apps to get the full benefit.
The changes have less to do with flashy new features and more to do with plumbing: routing, capacity, and the everyday reliability of staying connected. PIA says the latest versions of the app include logic designed to work with the updated backend as it is rolled out region by region.
The announcement comes after a long period of quiet from PIA. It has been since 2024 that the vendor has not released a substantial update to the app.
While it remains a good pick among the best VPN services thanks to its rock-bottom prices, deep customization, and a repeatedly audited log-free history, its pace of visible improvement had lagged behind rivals like NordVPN and Surfshark.
What PIA is really changing
As described in a blog post, the update focuses on three practical improvements.
The first is smarter automatic reconnections. PIA teams routinely take VPN servers offline for maintenance, and previous versions of the app sometimes left users with dropped connections or manual reconnections. The updated logic is designed to perform maintenance more smoothly and reduce avoidable outages.
The second points to a persistent user complaint: CAPTCHA. Because large VPNs funnel many people through shared IP addresses, websites often flag that traffic and display endless verification requests.
The company says it has made changes to routing and IP management to distribute traffic more evenly, which may reduce those challenges, although whether a site decides to throw a CAPTCHA at you or not is ultimately out of PIA’s purview.
The third improvement concerns location accuracy. PIA has updated parts of its location data so that selected locations more accurately align with your chosen region, which means more relevant local search results and other regional content.
A gradual release
These updates do not arrive everywhere at the same time. PIA describes the rollout as gradual, with some locations already on the newer platform and others still in the process of migrating.

Do you address criticism?
Such a substantial update is a significant step, if measured, from the PIA. Still, it does not touch on the areas where PIA has failed the most compared to its rivals. These include raw speed, where our latest tests recorded a notable drop, and transmission unlocking, which has become more spotty.
That said, the provider’s main strengths remain intact, including its large US server presence, open source applications, port forwarding, and a no-logs policy that Deloitte has verified in three audits.
For existing subscribers, the bottom line is simple: update the app for more stable connections and possibly fewer verification cycles.
For anyone comparing PIA to the competition, these updates smooth out some rough edges without changing the broader calculus. It’s still one of the most customizable and value-for-money VPNs out there, although it still has some way to go to regain speed.
