One of MLB’s top trade candidates ahead of the Aug. 3 deadline could be out for the rest of the season.
A’s catcher Shea Langeliers, who was enjoying a career year behind the plate and in the batter’s box, suffered a torn meniscus that could force him to miss the rest of the season, according to ESPN.
The 28-year-old injured his knee while running the bases and now he and the team are deliberating whether he should have surgery to repair the tear in his knee.

If the decision is surgery, ESPN reports it would be the end of Langeliers’ 2026 campaign.
But either way, teams that were interested in trading for the All-Star catcher are likely out of the running. Langeliers is considered one of the best at his position in the MLB, which is why the A’s had no plans to move him despite a 44-60 record on the year that puts them out of the playoffs.

Langeliers has been the team’s best player and represented them in his first All-Star Game earlier this month. And he’s doing it while others like Nick Kurtz, Brent Rooker and Jacob Wilson are dealing with injuries.
Langeliers is hitting .263/.332/.497 this season with an .829 OPS, 23 home runs and 51 RBI. These are the numbers the A’s expected Langeliers to post this season after a successful 2025 campaign that included 31 home runs and a career-high .861 OPS.

He was on his way to breaking a few more career records, but this injury puts a stop to everything.
And those playoff contenders are equally discouraged if they expected the A’s to change their position on Langeliers’ move before the deadline. The New York Yankees, for example, are a team expected to be in the catcher market before the deadline, and calling the A’s for Langeliers probably would have happened.
Now, catchers like Hunter Goodman of the Colorado Rockies and Adley Rutschman of the Baltimore Orioles could see an increase in interest among teams hoping to shore up that position to advance to the playoffs.

The A’s will have to move forward with Jonah Heim with Langeliers sidelined, and he himself has also been in trade talks due to his veteran prowess. However, he jumps into a starting role and may not be as available.
