“Fakhar’s opening partner could be Babar Azam or Saud Shakeel, depending on several factors such as conditions, opposition and coincidence strategy,” said a statement from Asad Shafiq, a member of the selection panel. “Both players are very capable at the top of the order, and Babar is particularly seasoned in the paper, regularly opening in T20is and also stands out in the Cape Test Test by scoring two half -centuries in the absence of Saim Ayub.”
The squad also retains its heavy element that saw Pakistan win three successive hate series towards the end of last year. Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf and Mohammad Hasnain are part of the last 15, with only a specialized spinner in Ahmed Ahmed. Nor Sufiyan Muqeem, who took four wickts in the debut in the only hate he played, or Shadab Khan, who captained his team for the glory of the Champions Cup last September, have made the final cut.
“One of the outstanding qualities on this side is its flexibility: an essential feature in today’s modern Cricket,” Asad Shafiq, a member of the selection panel. “We are sure that this squad has the right balance between youth and experience, and has all the bases covered. Each player has been chosen with a clear role in mind, ensuring that the captain has versatile options at his disposal.”
Irfan Khan, who was looked at by the Selection Committee as a key component of the middle order of Pakistan and bent down for his Philporation capacity, also retires. Faheem’s return to the fray leaves the back of the limited 50 on, after having an indifferent champions in September. However, strong exhibitions with the bat in the president’s Cup in October seem to have played a role in winning what seemed an unlikely retirement.
Pakistan’s first game in the Champions Trophy faces New Zealand in Karachi on February 19, after which they go to Dubai to play against India. They play their last group game against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on February 27.
