Tiring incidents interrupt fragile peace in Kurram

Dera Ismail Khan:

Two consecutive shooting incidents interrupted the fragile peace in Kurram on Friday, worsening the challenges faced by local residents who have already been lasting four months of road closures and food shortages and medical supplies, according to tribal officials and elders.

The riots began when the people who worked in a field in the Alta Kurram Bushehra area were fired by a rival group. Two people, Gul Ali Turi and Abbas Ali, were injured in the attack and taken to the Hospital of the District headquarters (DHQ) in parachute.

After the shooting, an exchange of shooting between the rival groups broke out, with both sides wearing heavy automatic weapons. The authorities intervened rapidly, running the fire and deployed the police and other personnel to avoid a greater escalation.

However, during the deployment process, according to the tribal leader Shafiq Turi, there was another shooting incident in which five people suffered gunshot wounds. The injured included the Kurram Assistant Commissioner (AC) Saeed Manan, who had gone there to control the situation.

Manan was urgently taken to the DHQ Hospital, where he underwent immediate surgery. The medical superintendent, Dr. Syed Mir Hassan Jan, said that Manan was shot in his stomach, therefore, surgery was necessary. He added that after surgery, Manan was transferred by plane to Peshawar through a helicopter.

Later in the day, a jirga of the rival matches met in Kohat along with the Grand Aman Jirga to discuss ways of establishing permanent peace in the district. The Jirga decided to form committees, which comprise representatives of the rival parties to implement the peace agreement signed in early January.
