Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched a national anti-political campaign on Sunday, managing drops of polyomyelitis to children under five as part of efforts to eradicate the disease.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Prime Minister Sharif reaffirmed his government’s commitment to eliminate Pakistan polyomyelitis.

“The national polyomyelitis vaccination campaign will be directed to millions of children to safeguard their future and health,” he said, expressing confidence in the dedication of health teams.

The prime minister recognized the challenge of last year, when 77 cases of polio were reported in the country, qualifying it as a “great setback.” However, he pointed out that only one case has been recorded so far in 2025, reaffirming its resolution to eliminate the virus with the support of international partners.

He stressed that police workers would reach remote areas and peoples, ensuring national coverage.

Prime Minister Shehbaz also expressed the hope that the efforts coordinated with global health organizations help fight polyomyelitis in Afghanistan, the neighboring country of Pakistan.

The Prime Minister thanked the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Saudi Arabia for their continuous support in Pakistan’s struggle against polyomyelitis.

Dr. Mukhtar Bharat, coordinator of the Prime Minister in National Health Services, said the authorities had been transparent about the cases of polyomyelitis last year. “We did not hide from the international community,” he said, adding that the centered efforts had significantly reduced cases.

Aysha Raza Farooq, the focal person of the prime minister in the eradication of polyomyelitis, urged the public to support the campaign. “The polyomyelitis vaccine is a national effort, and all segments of society must participate. Parents must cooperate to protect their children,” he said.

The Drive Anti-Police, which extends from February 3 to 9, aims to reach millions of children throughout Pakistan.
