The NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke about the possibility of a regular season of 18 games before the Super Bowl Lix during a press conference on Monday.
Goodell said there is “a lot of work to do” before expanding the season to 18 games and said it has not had any formal discussion with the union of the players to add a game.
The commissioner said he has had informal discussions with the executive director of the NFL players association, Lloyd Howell Jr., about the jump to 18 games.

“We know that fans worship football, and they want more football, but we have to be incredibly sensitive and intelligent with balance and how we deal with that.”
Goodell said that the changes that the League has made to reduce brain shocks and other injuries have made adding another game more feasible. He spoke in April in “The Pat Mcafee Show” about his desire to extend the regular NFL season to 18 games, instead of the 17 games season at this time.
The NFL made the leap to 17 games before the 2021 season, when they went from playing 16 regular seasonal games and four pre -season games to 17 regular seasonal games and three preseason games.
If the NFL decides to expand the regular season, the Super Bowl would be pushed back at the weekend of the presidents day.
