New York: A rare Stradivarius violin created more than 300 years ago by Antonio Stradivari during his gold period was sold for $ 11.3 million in an auction in New York on Friday, according to Sotheby’s.
“This extraordinary violin represents the pinnacle of crafts and history of classical music, its incomparable sound and its historical captivating collection and musicians alike,” said Sotheby President Mari-Claudia JimĂ©nez in a statement.
He said the buyer decided to remain anonymous.
Known for his extraordinary sound, the “Joachim-Ma Stradivarius”, named for his distinguished former owners, became the third most expensive musical instrument never sold in an auction.
The most expensive record belongs to another Stradivarius, the “Lady Blunt”, which was sold in 2011 for $ 15.9 million.
“What distinguishes the Joachim-Ma Stradivarius is its exceptional sound: rich, complex and full of depth,” said the auction house.
The instrument belonged to the famous Chinese and pedagogue violinist Si-Hon Ma, who before his death in 2009 donated the violin to his Alma Mater, the New England Conservatory in Boston, with the condition that one day the violin sells the scholarships of financing.
Before that, the violin belonged to the Virtuoso Hungarian of the nineteenth century Joseph Joachim, who was famous for his collaborations with composers such as Johannes Brahms.
