Year after year, more and more people around the world resort to VPN software to claim their online privacy and ignore the geographical restrictions of the Internet. However, not all services are the same. Now, Oscura VPN, a new supplier in the market, has launched a challenge to the entire industry and promises to “establish the standard for the next generation of VPN”.
Oscura VPN was officially launched on February 11, 2025, and essentially promises to do two things better than its competitors: to be “private by design” and “burde the restrictions on the Internet”.
VPN is only available for macOS at the time of writing. The support for other platforms will be added in the future.
Two VPN, better than one?
According to the founder of Oscura VPN, Carl Dong, today’s VPN industry comes with some considerable defects, the greatest is the confidence of suppliers.
In a blog, he said: “Fundamentally, the biggest defect of existing VPN companies is that they act as their main man in the middle, seeing so much your personal information (connect IP, email, billing address, etc.) and Your navigation history “.
In Dong’s opinion, not even the VPN without registration are a complete solution since, even a supplier that remains faithful to its promise, “can suffer a security violation and be compromised.”
We ask Dong more clarifications about these points, as well as for their version of independent audits without registration, but they still expect an answer at the time of publication.
What is important to know for now is that Oscura VPN decided to take a different route to be more “private by design.” VPN traffic is redirected through two different hops. However, unlike traditional VPNs of multiple jumps, each of these servers is independently administered by two different VPN suppliers.
Today we announce an association with Oscura VPN, a two -part VPN service that uses our Wireguard VPN servers as its “departure jump”. Read more here: https://t.co/bxwn9houh5February 11, 2025
To do so, Oscura VPN has been associated with one of the safest VPNs on the market, Mullvad VPN.
The dark servers act as the entry jump that encrypts their Internet connection through the Wireguard protocol to transmit it later to the output servers operated by Mullvad. Then it is the second VPN supplier (Mullvad) that technically connects it to the Internet.
“This divides’ who you are ‘of what you do’, which means that none of the parties can link your identity with your navigation,” explains Dong.
Oscura VPN states, in fact, that it can never decipher its traffic. For his part, Mullvad should not be able to see his personal information linked to his account.
In addition, Oscura VPN does not require its name, email, telephone address or no credit card information to register, reducing the amount of data from collected users.
A new censorship resistant technology
As mentioned above, Oscura VPN also promises to be better than its competitors to avoid censorship and evade the VPN blocks. To achieve that, use Quic (fast UDP Internet connections), a newer Internet protocol designed for maximum safety and speed.
According to Dong, the quic is better than current VPN obfusion technologies, since it combines with normal Internet traffic, while avoiding performance problems that could affect TCP connections (transmission control protocol).
Beyond technicalities, many VPN suppliers continue to invest in their characteristics resistant to censorship to stay at the forefront of the game against always sophisticated censors.
Nordvpn, for example, has recently published its new Nordhisper protocol resistant to censorship that uses web tunnel technology designed to imitate normal web traffic. Proton VPN also announced some important updates of his service during the summer to double his fight against censorship, including the expansion of support for his own stealthy VPN protocol in Windows.
While only time will tell if VPN obscures can really overcome censorship hard better than its competitors, it is definitely interesting to see another solution developing in this space.
Today is the day: Oscura VPN is now available! @OBSCURAVPN is the first VPN that:- You cannot register its activity by design-design networks that believes that obscure establishes the standard for a new generation of VPN, and they hope to verify it! 👇 Links + more in thread pic.twitter.com/biqbwxhavmFebruary 11, 2025
Currently, Oscura VPN only offers your supplier as Mac VPN, this means that if you are using different devices, you should wait a little more before you can try it.
The server network is also quite scarce compared to other VPN suppliers. These include some locations between Canada and the United States, some European countries (France, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United Kingdom), and less than a handful in Asia (Japan, Singapore and Turkey). Once again, it is said that the team is working to add more locations soon.
You can subscribe to a discount rate at this time of $ 6 per month, instead of the regular cost of $ 8.
While it is too early to say if it will eventually earn its place among the best VPN applications, it is worth mentioning that the software is completely open. This means that anyone with some technical knowledge can lift the hood and take a look at their code to see if he really does what he says.
