Pakistan asks for an effective diplomacy in Yemen’s crisis

UNITED NATIONS:

A superior Pakistani diplomat has asked to resolve the conflict in Yemen through “effective diplomacy and a collective response”, noting that it had graduated from the local to the regional and, ultimately, a crisis with global implications.

Speaking in the United Nations Security Council on Thursday, Ambassador Munir Akram, permanent representative of Pakistan before the UN, warned that the resumption of military operations will exacerbate the conflict further.

The crisis in Yemen, which worsened in 2014 after the Hutis rebels (officially known as Ansar-Lallah) seized the capital, Sanaa, has been marked by complex political and military tensions. More than 17 million people, half of the country’s population, continue to depend on humanitarian assistance and protection.

The Pakistani envoy said that the progress made in the December 2023 negotiations must be preserved and consolidated, ensuring the complete implementation of the commitments towards lasting peace.

Supporting the ongoing mediation efforts of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, Ambassador Akram said he shared his opinion that the road map remains a viable path towards a high national fire.
