The Superior Court of Lahore (LHC) has issued a detailed verdict that allows the sacrifice of street dogs, directing that incurable dogs are euthanized in a human and comfortable way.

Judge Javed Hassan announced the six -page ruling, specifying that the sacrifice must follow the guidelines established by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).

This decision follows a petition presented by citizen Anila Umair and other petitioners, who tried to stop the operation on the street dogs in Rawalpindi.

The petitioners had previously requested that the murder of street dogs be stopped, but their concerns were not addressed.

In his ruling, the court indicated that the relevant authorities informed the court that the operation had begun due to complaints from citizens about street dogs. Rawalpindi’s veterinarian explained that numerous complaints had been received regarding street dogs biting people, which led to the beginning of the operation. In addition, the officer declared that street dogs were causing health, religious and other serious problems, as well as creating significant anguish for the public.

The lawyer of the petitioners suggested that alternative methods, such as providing foods for dogs, could be implemented to address the issue of dog bites, arguing that dogs were attacking people due to hunger.

However, the court’s verdict emphasized that the Government and other relevant parties must comply with the policies on animals, public welfare and security. He also instructed that the sacrifice will be carried out according to the PMDC guidelines and that euthanasia is performed humanly to avoid unnecessary suffering by animals.
