He said that the prohibition of X (previously Twitter) during the past year has proven ineffective and, therefore, should now be lifted.
X (previously Twitter) has been blocked in the country for a year. However, users have continued accessing the social media platform through VPN.
According to a report, the number of users X in the country is approximately 4.5 million.
In February 2024, approximately ten days after the general elections held on February 8, the Pakistani government imposed a prohibition on the social media platform X (previously known as Twitter). This action was taken during the career’s government mandate.
The social media platform X was blocked in Pakistan due to national security concerns, not to limit freedom of expression, the Minister of Information, Attaullah Tarar later explained.
In March, the Ministry of Interior informed the Superior Court of Sindh (SHC) that the platform had been officially blocked in February after intelligence reports. Access to X has been restricted in several regions in Pakistan since February 17.
Tarar clarified that the decision to ban X was taken before the general elections of February 8 due to “compliance problems.” He dismissed suggestions that the ban was not announced.
Tarar also explained that separatists and terrorists, particularly from the Baluchistan Liberation Army (BL), were using the platform to promote antistatal activities, including live terrorist acts broadcasts. He stressed that such actions could not afford.
