- iOS 18.4 The beta update adds a third row of applications in Apple Carplay
- Not all information and entertainment systems are compatible
- The update is welcome, but we still expect news in Carplay 2.0
Some Apple iPhone users are already experiencing some of the updates lower than the last beta update of iOS 18.4 brings, including smarter priority notifications using Apple Intelligence.
However, there has been a more subtle change in Apple Carplay’s experience, which has previously been announced and has only been discovered by some users by chance.
When connecting to the information and entertainment system of a vehicle, wirelessly or by means Three rows of four increasing the number of applications that can be shown without having to slide to reveal more.

Although Apple Carplay is introduced in March 2014, it has only really enjoyed numerous minor updates on how you see, feel and perform, apparently ignoring the fact that many modern vehicles now come with huge exhibitions of tickets and tickets.
The most recent update seems to address this problem, expanding in a proportion to the size of the screen shown.
That said, there is currently no news about the necessary parameters to enjoy the additional line of applications, only that it seems to work on those largest information and entertainment screens, particularly those with a portrait orientation.
Carplay 2 can’t come enough soon
Initially, Apple said we would see a completely new version of its Carplay system in 2024, but that suggested timeline has already passed and we are still waiting to see what comes next.
Far from being simply a way to reflect a handful of applications of its iPhone, Apple CarPlay 2 promises greater integration with all the screens found in a modern vehicle, effectively assuming everything, from the cluster of digital instruments to the information system and entertainment.
Apple revealed that I was working with Porsche and Aston Martin in a specific brand system that would remain faithful to the inheritance and distinctive design of the Marques, but that would effectively form the operating system on which everything is executed.
This would mean that Apple user applications and user interface would be available at all digital contact points, including digital instrument binnacles and tactile screens oriented to passengers in the front and rear seats.
Possibly it is possibly the only automotive manufacturer that takes advantage of Apple’s car manufacturer tool kit and expands Apple CarPlay’s offer so far so far.
Apple’s more functionality introduction in its My Porsche application denies the need to leave Apple Carplay to do things how to change the radio station, heat to cool the cabin and verify the cargo status of the vehicle and other configurations.
But this is still out of integration levels that Apple Carplay 2 has previously promised, and this could be part of the problem.
To take charge of a complete board, Apple has had to work with automotive manufacturing giants notoriously slow, effectively requesting permission to access vehicles and users, which is probably something that inherited car manufacturers have not been particularly comfortable sense.
