The Rawalpindi district jail trip, now Adiala Central Jail has completed 142 years, marking a significant chapter in its history. Over the years, Rawalpindi’s central prison has been relocated four times.
Initially, when Rawalpindi was a small town, the prison was located in the Chowk committee, Teli Mohalla Road, near Triangle Road. After a brief period, he moved to the Ministry of Current Education. In 1882, the prison was established in its current location near Jinnah Park and the judicial complex, which covered 84.4 Acres, where it remained for 104 years.
This historical prison had numerous combatants of the freedom of the movement of independence, which were brought here from cities such as Lahore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Indian Punjab, Dhaka and Chittagg for the British. The old adjacent cemetery abandoned contains the tombs of these liberty fighters.
In particular, Allama Mashriqi was also imprisoned here. During that time, the prisoners were escorted to the court on foot, since there were no police vehicles for judicial transport. Now, due to the distance from the prison, 12 vehicles and five special trucks are used, which cost millions in monthly fuel expenses.
The founder of the Popular Party of Pakistan (PPP) and former prime minister, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, was also imprisoned there and executed on April 4, 1979. After its execution, General Ziaul Haq decided to erase the historical importance of the jail through the construction of a new one. In 1988, the old prison was demolished and part of the land became a housing society, while a police training university was established.
After the PPP protests, Jinnah Park was built in part of the Earth. The judicial complex was built later at the Site of the Police University, and the new Central Prison of Rawalpindi was established near Adiala Village, about 13 km from the Rawalpindi courts.
Adial prison won global recognition when Prince Carlos of the United Kingdom (United Kingdom) visited him, where British national Mirza Tahir, convicted in a case of murder, expected the execution. During this visit, President Pervez Musharraf commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment and then sent him back to the United Kingdom. The prison became known internationally again after the execution of Mumtaz Qadri, the murderer of the Governor of Punjab, Salman Taseer, and during the trial of the eight suspects involved in the attacks of Mumbai 2008.
The Adial prison, completed in 1986, covers 100 acres and initially accommodated 1,927 prisoners. This capacity was extended to 2,700 and then to 3,500 in the third phase.

The prison is equipped with separate rooms for women, children and VIP, along with three execution cameras, a mosque, a church, an imambargah, a library, a computer center, a sewing center, a factory, cultivation lands and sports fields.
The former Deputy Superintendent (DS) of the Adiala prison, Chaudhry Ayub, emphasizes the high safety of the installation, pointing out the need for Islamabad’s jail to be completed immediately for easier management. According to Ajab Gul, a former prisoner, bribes ensure the availability of all types of prohibited foods and beverages, and prices are twice those of the market. If one has money, even a mobile phone contact is easily organized.
Since the detention of the founder of PTI, the prison security system has been tight, with thorough cell controls and rigorous procedures.
