Ryan Peake, a former member of the bicycle gang, qualifies for an important golf tournament


Australian golfer Ryan Peake has officially changed his life.

The 31 -year -old was classified for the Open Championship on Sunday with a victory in the New Zealand Open, five years after spending half a decade in prison.

Peake was a member of the Motorcycle Gang of the rebels and was sentenced by assault at the age of 21. He had been a teammate of the champion of 2022 Champion of the year Cameron Smith at the time he was convicted.

After leaving prison, he returned to golf and began to rebuild his career with the help of the main coach Richie Smith and with the support of his family.

He received his Australasian tour card this season, and this was his first professional victory.

“I always knew I could do it, but it was just a matter of when I was going to do it,” Peake said. “Together with my family and my team, everyone believed and, above all, I also believed.”

Peake followed the night leader Guntaek Koh of South Korea for four blows in the final round of Sunday at the Milbrook Resort of Queenstown’s Milbrook. He took the lead for the first time in Hole 67 and was 55 holes without a ghost.

“I just changed my life,” Peake said. “This is what I do. I just want to be here and play golf. History is what it is. But I’m here playing golf.”

The elders have seen a good amount of wild stories, perhaps more recently the performance of Michael Block in the PGA 2023 championship.
