- The OnePlus Watch 3 was recently revealed and then delayed for two months
- Since then, OnePlus has confirmed that the new laptop will only receive two years of software support
- The company also confirmed that the wear os 5 support for OnePlus Watch 2 will arrive in the third quarter
The OnePlus Watch 3 will only get two years of launch software support, the company confirmed, and the news for OnePlus Watch 2 owners are not much better.
The OnePlus Watch 3 was announced as one of this year’s most exciting smartwatch releases, and a contender for the best Android smart watch thanks to its excellent battery life.
However, the launch was hindered by an unfortunate typographic error of ‘Meda in China’ that has seen the launch delayed for two full months. Among the Hubbub of the launch of Bungled, the company has now announced two very disappointing software news about the future of its smart watches line.
As reported by our friends on Android Central, OnePlus says that Watch 3 will only receive two operating system updates and two years of bimonnsual security updates. As for the owners of OnePlus Watch, they wait patiently to Wear OS 5, that will come in the third quarter, a year after leading Android models such as Pixel Watch 3 and Galaxy Watch 7 gets the update.
Disappointing software revelation of OnePlus Watch 3
As an Apple Watch veteran, I am constantly bewildered by the quite fragmented approach and lacking software in Android smart watches, and even the best Garmins.
To start with the last announcement, OnePlus has essentially confirmed that the owners of OnePlus Watch 2 will get Wear OS 5 completely a year after their launch in leading Samsung and Galaxy models. Just to rub it, Wear Os 6 will probably debut in the meantime.
Perhaps more worrying, the new Watch 3 OnePlus has a confirmed software support cycle of only two years. As Android Central points out, that is a year less than OnePlus’s previous three -year commitment to the OnePlus Watch 2, a useful life that is already quite disappointing for a smart watch.
The only rise is that, given the delay of OnePlus Watch 3, most people have probably not yet bought one and, therefore, they can reconsider their purchase. Both Samsung and Google offer better support in terms of software life, ensuring that their smart watches last longer and work more effectively thanks to updates, including important safety corrections to protect your personal data. Given the price parity in the conventional smart watch market, the three or four years software support drastically improves the value for money of your purchase.
The possible owners of OnePlus Watch 3 who are updating in series could be less worried, but this revelation also indicates that a full year could happen before Wear OS 6 arrives at that model, which is surely another reason to reconsider the purchase.
In more positive news, OnePlus has confirmed that a smaller model of clock 3, and a cell support version, are on their way at the end of this year, although that is enough to calm concerns about software support and longevity is another matter.
