The Sindh government has begun the distribution of solar housing systems (SHS) to 200,000 low -income homes throughout the province, as part of the Sindh Solar Energy Project (SSEP).
The Sindh Prime Minister Murad Ali Shah made the announcement in an event held near Kpt Interchange, DHA phase-i, where he also confirmed that PPP president Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari had ordered the purchase of 300,000 additional solar units for distribution among low-income families.
“Through this initiative, we provide solar energy solutions to low -income households, which allows them to improve their quality of life, access a better education for their children and improve their businesses,” Shah said.
Solar housing systems will be distributed with significant subsidies, which makes them more affordable for needy families. Each system includes a robust solar panel, a solar panel of 80W, an intelligent energy management unit, a long -term battery and essential accessories such as LED bulbs, mobile load facilities and a pedestal fan.
During its direction, the CM also highlighted the challenges faced by the Government of Sindh in the renewable energy sector, particularly in the development of the Thar Coal project.
Despite the setbacks of federal government policies and financial limitations, the provincial government has been committed to expanding renewable energy sources.
Shah said that in 2014, the government of Sindh took a bold step by welding 600 schools in Nagarparkar and launch two solar energy schemes in Sukkur. However, the federal government’s refusal to approve additional energy generation projects hindered greater progress.
“We face a significant opposition when we try to introduce solar energy in the country. However, despite the challenges, we continue with our efforts to ensure that Sindh satisfies their energy needs,” he said.
The CM also discussed the success of the Thar Coal project, which has begun to generate the cheapest electricity in Pakistan. He accredited former President Asif Ali Zardari for his efforts to ensure federal cooperation and guarantee the completion of the project.
“We are proud that Thar Coal is now playing a key role in providing affordable energy to Sindh and the country in general,” he added.
The Sindh government is also working with the federal government to develop a railway line dedicated to the transport of Thar coal, further promoting the energy autonomy of the province.
In addition, the Sindh government has been associated with Chinese companies to develop solar hybrid energy projects, with an approach to the schemes of 350 MW and 75 MW, which were finished during the recent visit of Asif Ali Zardari to China.
The CM reaffirmed the government’s commitment to provide 300 free electricity units per month to low -income families, aligning with the PPP manifesto and sustainable development objectives (SDG).
He expressed the hope that the objective of distributing 200,000 SHS kits for July 2025 will be reached, with a 400 kits aim per district per week.
The Minister of Energy, Nasser Shah, emphasized that SHS kits are distributed equally in the 30 Sindh districts. The distribution is facilitating with the help of NGOs established such as Hands, Srso and Sefco, ensuring the efficient delivery of kits.
He also noted that the beneficiaries are being carefully selected using data from the Benazir Income Program (BISP), ensuring that the most needy families are prioritized.
The CM concluded by praising the work of the Sindh energy department and its team, stating that the province is determined to lead the way in the transition to clean energy, with the support of the World Bank and other international development partners.
“The Sindh Solar Energy Project is a crucial step towards a greener and more equitable future,” he added.
