Paris: FIFA has announced that the teams competing in the World Club World Cup this year in the United States will share a $ 1 billion record in prizes.
The figure is significantly more than the prize in the money offered for the latest world cups for men or women.
The World Football rectory body has given few details about the financing of the first edition of the 32 team tournament, which will take place every four years, but has registered an important station and sponsors in recent weeks.
In a statement confirming the money from the award offered, FIFA said it hoped to generate $ 2 billion in revenues of the expanded clubs. He also confirmed that a female edition will take place since 2028.
“The FIFA Club World Cup will not only be the club’s football pinnacle, but also a vivid demonstration of solidarity that will benefit clubs on a scale that no other competition has done,” said FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
“All income generated by the tournament will be distributed to the participating clubs and through the solidarity of the club worldwide, since FIFA will not maintain a single dollar.”
The Dazn British transmission service received the exclusive global rights of the tournament, which will take place from June 14 to July 13, in December. A source close to negotiations said the contract was worth around one billion euros ($ 1.05 billion).
FIFA has also signed sponsorship contracts with Coca-Cola, Bank of America, the Chinese Electronics Brand Hisense and the Belgian Brewers Ab Inbev.
In comparison, the Total Money Prize for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was $ 440 million, while for the 2023 World Cup in New Zealand and Australia, it was $ 110 million.
The UEFA Champions League of this season, with a new format of 36 clubs, will pay a total of 2.47 billion euros ($ 2.6 billion) to the clubs involved.
Generalized criticism about the well -being of the player
The expansion of the FIFA tournament has been received with generalized criticism, especially in Europe, largely due to concerns about the well -being of the players.
The Footballers’ FIFPRO Global Union and the European League Association filed a complaint with the European Commission in October against FIFA, accusing it of abusing its dominant position by overcoming the calendar.
The UEFA also expanded the Champions League this season, and some players, including the winner of Ballon D’Or, Rodri, and the captain of the Liverpool, Virgil Van Dijk, have increased the possibility of a strike.
“I think we are close.
“It is not Rodri’s opinion or whatever. I think it is the general opinion of the players.”
The tournament will have 12 teams from Europe, six from South America and four from Asia, Africa and North America and Central.
The city of Auckland and Inter Miami of Lionel Messi complete the alignment.
Not all the reaction has been negative, with the coach of Paris Saint-Germain, Luis Enrique, insisting that “all” would want to play.
“Once every four years, there is this new and extremely exciting competition. Everyone wants to go to the Club World Cup,” he said last year.
The tournament will take place in 12 places in 11 cities in the United States, with the final at the Metlife Stadium in New Jersey, which will also organize the 2026 World Cup final.
