The launch of GPT-4.5 for ChatGPT naturally leads to questions about how the model compares with its many rivals. After comparing it with GPT-4O and obtaining somewhat ambiguous results in which model is preferable, I decided to look for a more direct competitor, Google Gemini, specifically the most recent Google Gemini Flash 2.P 2.P
GPT-4.5 claims to be better in emotional understanding and offer less hallucinations than has been the case previously. Meanwhile, Gemini Flash 2.0 is Google’s latest iteration of its quite successful set of AI models capable of juggling with text, images, audio and even video tickets. To test them both, four indications occurred to me that reflect typical things with which an average person may need help.
Weekend trips
First it was to plan a quick weekend trip. I asked both chatbots to: “Plan a weekend getaway to Catskills, including hiking recommendations and restaurant and accommodation options.”
Chatgpt 4.5 prepared an orderly itinerary that suggests several walks in different difficulties and durations of trails along with nearby dining places and a place to stay to have the atmosphere of a cozy relaxed weekend. He also offered some additional tips on getting there. Gemini also had many good recommendations of walks and meals, but his only advice on places to stay were cities in the general area, so not so proactive in his response.
Total translation
I decided to try a simple translation test below, since it is always a popular use of the chatbots of AI. I asked the two chatbots to: “Translate the phrase ‘Good morning’ to the French, Spanish and Japanese.” As you can see before, the only difference is the GPT-4.5 links. So, for basic translation between generalized languages, there really is no big difference.

Then came the humor test, asking every AI that: “Tell me a joke on artificial intelligence.” GPT 4.5 had fun with the cheesy game: “Why did IA go to the Art School? Because I wanted to learn to get its own conclusions.” Gemini was with an equally silly words game, “Why did AI break with her chatbot girlfriend? Because she kept giving her answers with scripts!” It is true that Gemini’s joke is not incredible, but it would put it at the same level as GPT-4.5 in terms of real humor.
Meteorological measure
I ended with a classic question about the weather here in Nyack, New York. This attracted the biggest difference in the answers. Gemini only gave the current climate, but GPT-4.5 made an hour measurement with images that denoted the weather along with the words.
Match met
After all these tests, I have to admit that I cannot say honestly that one of the AI chatbots is better than the other. GPT-4.5 and Gemini had some differences, especially with the climate option, but otherwise, I would not notice unless it is also the type of person who thinks there is a big difference between Coca-Cola or Pepsi. You will get answers, you will get some fun, and you probably still end two verifying Google or ask a real person to be sure.
