The security forces frustrated a second terrorist attack against a border control point of Punjab-Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in a week, police officers said on Saturday.

Around 15 to 20 heavily armed terrorists launched an assault prior to dawn to the control point of Lakhani, using rocket launchers and other heavy weapons, according to a Punjab police spokesman, Express News reported.

The attackers approached the post in small groups from multiple directions, but were detected through thermal image cameras.

The alert staff immediately responded with machine guns and mortar fire, forced the assailants to withdraw.

“There are reports of important militant casualties, although the exact figures remain without confirming,” added the police spokesman.

Six days before, a similar attack was repelled at the same control point.

The operation was directed by Regional Police officer Dera Ghazi Khan Captain (RETD) Sajad Hassan Khan, with district police support equipment that quickly reinforces the position.

The Punjab Inspector, Dr. Usman Anwar, praised the forces for his rapid action to prevent the attack. Until now, the Police have successfully repelled 19 assaults similar to the border control points.
