NYMVPN, the most safe VPN in the world “claimed was launched at the Frontline Club in London on March 13.
Together with the famous activist and complainant Chelsea Manning, the NYMVPN team presented the official NYMVPN version to the public for the first time.
The Swiss headquarters enters a market full of people from the best VPN with a clear objective: revolutionize what it believes is a defective industry, with the NYM CEO, Harry Halpin, claiming that “digital privacy is broken.”
End -to -end encryption “is not enough”
NYMVPN aims to solve an area often overlooked by digital privacy: metadata protection.
Existing virtual private networks (VPN) and other privacy tools mainly use end -to -end encryption to keep it private online. This technique essentially stir the content of your communication to avoid third -party access.
However, Halpin explained, even the encrypted messages leave traces, as with whom he is talking and when. With advanced technology such as AI, metadata monitoring is becoming easier to do.
“And that is quite dangerous,” said Halpin. “Like him [Edward] Snowden’s leaks revealed that if you have enough metadata, you will not really need the content. “
A novel approach: the Mixnet
The need for the privacy of metadata has been clear for some in the industry, certainly for those who formed the NYM team behind the first iteration of Mixnet, for some time.
In fact, the Ryptography professor and now the NYM scientific office, Claudia Díaz, made a doctorate on Mix networks, a theory proposed by cryptographer David Chaum in the 80s, between 2000 and 2005.
In 2016, Chelsea Manning began working in the form of making Tor Browser and similar tools for preservation of privacy be safer, while in prison for filtering the classified documents of the United States government to Wikileaks. She said: “We recognized that the amount of calculation to which it was going to be accessible in the next decade would be much easier for traffic analysis to decipher anonymity throughout the network.”
In December 2017, Manning would meet with Halpin, since he also began to consider such a system to better protect metadata. Fast progress until 2025, NYMVPN is the first iteration of VPN with a mixnet system that generates noise that claims to protect these small digital traces, but important, that we all leave behind.
As Ania Piototska, director of Research at NYM, explained in more detail during the launch of the product, the NYMVPN Mixnet includes three fundamental components:
- A multiple servers routing system. This ensures that its connection is reduced through five independent hops, so no single entity should be able to link its IP address with its activity.
- Cover traffic. The network randomly generates traffic to hinder metadata monitoring. Basically seeks to hide your communication patterns within a noisy multitude of false Internet traffic.
- Data package mixture. Along the way, data packages are considered to make sure the time brand is to cover while confusing the request that data packages move between you and the receiver.
Not forgetting the old GOOD VPN characteristics
While NYMVPN seeks to differentiate themselves from competitors with their mixnet technology that generates noise, a decentralized servers network and an anonymous token -based payment system, the supplier has not forgotten the characteristics that VPN users expect in a safe VPN application.
Nymvpn applications fully open source are available for all main platforms (Android, iOS, Macos, Windows and Linux). They include death switch and leak prevention functions to ensure that if the VPN connection falls, their data remains protected. At the time of writing, you can choose from more than 500 servers operators in more than 50 countries.
All applications are based on Rust, a relatively new coding language that is believed to be better for safety and performance: Expressvpn has recently rewritten its internal light protocol in Rust.
The NYMVPN operations director Alexis Roussel confirmed that the team is also working on a divided tunnel option. This will not only allow you to customize which applications and websites redirect through the VPN tunnel, but will also decide which to protect with their mode of two Amneziaw jumps based on Wireguard (the so -called fast mode) and those through the most private Mixnnet mode (but slower).
The new default value for data privacy?
NYMVPN can be moving to a VPN market full of people, but promises to make waves to fix what the team believes that it is a defective digital privacy industry.
However, the final objective is even more ambitious: NYMVPN wants to become the new default value for data privacy.
“NYM is starting with a single VPN application that allows people anywhere in the world to access and benefit from the privacy properties of our network,” said Ania Piotrowska, Nym research director. “But the network opens the door to more integrations that can provide privacy solutions by default in several industries, from medical care to legal services and telecommunications.” We believe that privacy is a basic right and we want to provide a solution to which it is accessible to all in any type of online situations. “
