“The first thing I said is, what happens if we write it together? And would you be prepared to put on a different hat with me for the first time?” Jack added. “Working with Stephen as a writer was very exciting. It was very interesting to have a totally different conversation with him before the words were on the page and we had to look at ourselves.”
He also continued to share: “We had that, to understand this problem, to look at male anger, male anger, we had to understand our own anger and our own anger, and our own problems and our own cruelty, and the ways in which we have been less than perfect.”
“And Stephen and I could have some very honest discussions, and we went to some very dark places, and I think honesty is shown on the screen,” Jack Thorne added.
In addition, Graham recalled how the news about young children involved in fatal stabbing led him to develop the program. “I read an article in the newspaper about a boy who had stabbed a girl, and then a few months later, in the news, there was a piece, and it was, again, he was a boy who had stabbed a girl, and were opposite extremes of the country,” said Stephen Graham.
