Almost 10 years after the iconic Pebble smart watch was suspended, the iconic clock is back with two new smart watch models “with a wink -shaped” that look low power screens and pack a 30 -day battery life, designed by the founder of Pebble, Eric Migicovsky.
Limited smart watches will be available from July, running the open source pebble operating system.
Core 2 duo
The first of the two watches is the Core 2 Duo, a device very similar to the old Pebble 2 discontinued, with some improvements.
With four buttons and an electronic paper MIP screen of 1.26 inches ‘ultra crispy’ of 1.26 inches similar to some of the Best Garmin watchesThis low power screen allows the Core 2 Du to maintain a long battery life in the impressive more than 30 days.
The smart watch, which comes in white or black polycarbonate frames and matching synthetic straps, also has a loudspeakers and microphones, steps monitoring and sleep monitoring.
Interestingly, the sleep monitoring function does not use a heart rate monitor (the Core 2 duo does not have one) but an accelerometer, which analyzes the movement during sleep. A barometer and a compass complete the hardware characteristics.
“This is the clock of my dreams,” Micicovsky told Techradar in an exclusive interview. “It is similar to Pebble Time 2, which we announced in 2016 but we never send, to disgust many people who sent me by email or sent me a text message in the last eight years.
“The main reason we are doing this is that the market does not meet the needs of people who want exactly this set of characteristics. There are many options in the Amoled space … but nobody is doing something like this.”
As for the software, both the Pebble operating system and its accompanying phone application are open source, which makes the clock eminently pirateable. Migicovsky told us that there are already 10,000 applications available for the device thanks to the old Pebble OS infrastructure, and that 12,000 developers have registered to potentially create new new ones since the initial announcement.
The new hardware allows developers to use the clock in new ways, such as chatgpt basic integration using the speaker and clock microphone.
“The smart watch is a great form of form for people who can make a fast chatgpt consultation,” says Migicovsky. “I’m just putting it for developers to know that we have a speaker for something … we keep our options open here.”
The Core 2 Duo will cost $ 149 (around £ 115 / au $ 235) and will be sent in July, available exclusively in the online Pebble store.
Central time 2
In addition to the Core 2 duo, Migicovsky and his two -people Core device company are also debuting the Core Time 2, a premium version with a color screen and a heart rate monitor.
A little larger, the Core Time 2 has a 1.5-inch e-paper screen of 64 colors, comprising 88% more pixels than the Core 2 duo screen. The screen is also a touch screen, mainly because Migicovsky wanted to add complications that remind of The best Apple watches.
“We are maintaining all our buttons, and they will be the main interface, but I wanted to add a touch screen, again, mainly to maintain our open options, but a key use case are complications,” says Migicovsky. “Otherwise, in Pebble, you must dig through a menu to get to an application, and at that point, I could also get my phone.
“I love complications in the Apple Watch where you can have a small widget that shows some information, then touches that widget for a bigger screen.”
The Core Time 2 still includes all the characteristics listed above in the Core 2 Duo, including 30 days of the estimated battery duration, but has a metal frame instead of the polycarbonate. The clock will be sold for $ 225 (around £ 175 / au $ 355) and will also be sent in July.
