- Apple has patented a radical Redesign of Apple Watch
- It reveals a new unique folding design with two internal screens and an outdoor screen
- It also has a camera and even rotating and sliding elements
A new patent has revealed that Apple is considering a radical redesign of the Apple Watch that would offer a folding double screen and a camera.
The patent, innocuously called ‘portable electronic device’, was presented by Apple in September 2023 and published today, March 20.
First seen by patentlyopple, the presentation reveals a portable device “that includes a fixed portion and a mobile portion” with a screen set, and an optical sensor, presumably to register when the screen opens and closes.
The patent text indicates that even the best smart watches available today “are limited in terms of screen size and functionality in relation to their smartphone counterparts”, and are as such preferred for many device interactions.
Apple highlights a “constant need for a better functionality of portable electronic devices”, hence its innovative proposed redesign.
Is this the Apple Watch of the future?
The usual dense patent language is complemented with images that clearly reveal Apple’s vision for an intelligent clock of the future.
It refers to a device that contains an exterior screen and an internal screen, the latter is two hidden screens inside a folding mechanism similar to any folding smartphone with which it can be familiar.
One of those patent iterations includes a “continuous” screen, a unit attached by a folding mechanism, instead of two separate screens that bend with each other.
There is also a reference to a mobile rotating portion that can move around an axis, as shown in the image above.
Another part of the patent refers to an exterior and Chamber matched inward that could be used to take photos and respond calls to Facetime.
As you can imagine, this extravagant review of Apple Watch is not close to any launch, so you don’t expect an Ultra 3 folding Apple Watch with two cameras.
However, Apple has at least explored the idea of reviewing Apple Watch design. By nature, its factor in form has a small and limited range, so a folding visualization mechanism could be a novel solution to solve that problem.
Another recently revealed patent shows that Apple is considering the blood pressure monitoring technology driven by a liquid sensor in the Apple Watch strap.
Of course, this is simply an idea committed to paper at this time, and day light is never seen, but it is certainly an attractive look behind the scene about how Apple considers designs for future technology, especially its portable devices.
