The Superior Court of Islamabad (IHC) has issued notices prior to admission to the Federal Government, Prime Minister and the President about the delay in appointing the Chief of Elections Commissioner (CEC) and two members of the Pakistan Electoral Commission (ECP).
The notices were issued after a petition presented by the leaders of the opposition Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz, challenging the delay in filling the crucial positions.
The case was heard by Judge Muhammad Azam Khan, who also addressed notices to CEC and ECP members.
The lawyer of the petitioners Sameer Khosa argued that the members of the CEC and the CEC continue to serve despite the expiration of their terms, which according to him violates the constitutional provisions.
The court asked if the appointment process had begun, which Khosa replied that the parliamentary committee responsible for the process has not yet been formed.
The court has sought an answer from all interested parties and postponed the hearing until April 29. The delay in the appointment of electoral officials has raised concerns about the operation of the ECP, particularly in the period prior to future elections.
