The Provincial Disaster Authority (PDMA) PUNJAB has issued an alert detailing caution measures in response to the threat of possible drought conditions caused by significantly reduced rain.
According to a circular issued to commissioners, attached commissioners and relevant departments in Punjab, the Department of Meteorology reports a 38% decrease in winter rainfall throughout the province. The areas of Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar and Rahim Yar Khan face the greatest risk of drought.
PDMA PUNJAB warned that reduced rain could negatively affect the crops of the Rabi season. In addition, a potential decrease in rice production can lead to substantial economic losses for local farmers.
The general director PDMA, Irfan Ali Kathia, emphasized the importance of proactively informing farmers about the possible water shortage. He stressed that the arrangements have already been made in advance of the shortage of water in the regions of Thal and Cholistan, urging the local administration to remain attentive.
Kathia also declared that the School Education Department will be involved in awareness campaigns. He stressed that preventive measures could help mitigate crop damage, emphasizing collective responsibility when addressing the shortage of anticipated water.
