The Pakistan Energy Regulator has approved a reduction of RS1.71 per unit in electricity prices throughout the country, including Karachi, under the chief of relief of Levy Petroleum, authorities said on Thursday.
The National Regulatory Authority of Electric Power (NEPRA) approved a federal government proposal to reduce electricity tariffs and has sent its decision to federal authorities for its implementation.
The price cut will be applied for the quarter from April to June 2025 and will benefit consumers throughout the country, including those attended by K-Electric. However, relief will not be extended to Lifeline’s consumers, Nepra said in a statement.
The Federal Government had submitted a request to reduce the rate last month, after its movement to increase the petroleum tax on high speed gasoline and diesel in RS10 per liter.
The Government said that the cutting of the energy rate was aimed at transmitting relief to consumers of additional income generated through fuel levies.
Nepra held a hearing on the proposal on April 4 and subsequently approved the price reduction.
Previously, electricity rates were reduced in RS1.90 per unit under quarterly adjustments for consumers throughout Pakistan, including Karachi.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also announced a significant reduction in the electricity rate for national users, to RS7.41 per unit, which reduces the average rate to RS38.37 per unit. For industrial users, a cut of RS7.59 per unit was announced, reducing the average rate to RS40.60 per unit.
