Sindh announces a special unit to handle cases of misuse of social networks

The Sindh Prime Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah announced on Thursday the creation of a regulatory authority and protection of social networks under the Law of Electronic Crimes (PECA), as well as a new center of excellence to counteract violent extremism.

The ads were made during the 32nd Meeting of the APEX Committee chaired by CM Murad in the Chamber of the Principal Minister. The high -level meeting was attended by provincial ministers, security officials and representatives of key federal and provincial departments.

The Social Network Authority will be empowered to regulate illegal or offensive content, enforce content standards, administer the platform registration and recommend the complete or partial blockade of platforms. “This step aims to guarantee digital security and protect people’s rights on social networks,” said Prime Minister.

The Provincial Government also revealed plans to establish a center of excellence in counteracting violent extremism, which will focus on research, strategy and policy development to combat extremism.

The center will support horror financing investigations for the Financial Action Task Group (FATF) and help counteract online radicalization, hate discourse and youth crime.

CM Murad instructed the Secretary of the Interior to present the draft legislation for the center at the next cabinet meeting.

The main minister also requested better coordination with Punjab and Baluchistan to carry out joint operations against bandits in river areas.

Discussing the repatriation of illegal foreign citizens, Shah said that the provincial government had completed the first phase of the illegal foreigners’s repatriation plan (IFRP), deporting more than 85,000 undocumented people for 2023-24.

The transit centers for repatriation were established in Karachi, Hyderabad and Jacobabad under the supervision of the respective attached commissioners.

Expressing concern about the growing number of traffic accidents and recent fire incidents caused by tankers and dumperadores, CM Murad ordered the police to strictly apply traffic regulations and apprehend those responsible for sabotage.
